How to Get Started in Tech: A Beginner’s Guide for Black Women

Hey Sis,

So you’re thinking about getting into tech? That’s amazing! But if you’re anything like most of us, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed by all the information out there. Where do you even start? What should you learn first? Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered. Let’s break it down, step by step, so you can start your tech journey with confidence.

1. Find Your ‘Why’

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let’s talk about your ‘why.’ Why do you want to get into tech? Is it the salary? The flexibility? The opportunity to create something amazing? Whatever your reason, hold onto it. Your ‘why’ will keep you motivated when things get tough (and trust me, there will be days when you want to throw your laptop out the window). But when you have a strong ‘why,’ you’ll push through and come out stronger on the other side.

2. Choose Your Path

The tech industry is vast, and there are so many different paths you can take. Here are a few to consider:

  • Software Development: If you enjoy problem-solving and building things from scratch, software development might be your jam. You’ll learn programming languages like Python, JavaScript, or C#, and use them to create applications, websites, and more.

  • Cybersecurity: Are you passionate about protecting data and keeping people safe online? Cybersecurity could be the path for you. You’ll learn how to defend systems against hackers and keep sensitive information secure.

  • Data Science: If you love numbers and patterns, data science might be calling your name. You’ll learn how to analyze data, make sense of it, and use it to inform decisions—skills that are in high demand across all industries.

  • AI/ML Engineering: Want to be on the cutting edge of tech? Artificial intelligence and machine learning are where it’s at. You’ll learn how to create smart systems that can learn and adapt, just like a human brain (but faster!).

Take some time to explore these options and see which one resonates with you. Don’t worry if you’re not sure yet—just start somewhere, and you can always pivot later.

3. Start Learning the Basics

Once you’ve chosen a path, it’s time to start learning the basics. Here’s the best part: You don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy courses (at least not at first). There are tons of free resources out there that can help you get started. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • FreeCodeCamp: A great place to start learning how to code, with interactive lessons in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more.

  • Khan Academy: Offers free courses in computer programming, especially great for beginners.

  • Codecademy: Offers a mix of free and paid courses that are interactive and beginner-friendly.

The key is to start small. Pick one language or one area of focus, and dive in. Don’t worry if it feels overwhelming at first—that’s completely normal. The more you practice, the more things will start to click. When you’re ready to dive in to learning more details check out our programming course.

4. Build, Build, Build

The best way to learn tech is by doing. Once you’ve got the basics down, start building your own projects. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy—just something that interests you. Want to create a simple website? Go for it. Want to analyze some data from your favorite sports team? Do it.

Building projects will not only reinforce what you’ve learned but also give you something to show potential employers down the line. Plus, it’s a great way to stay motivated and see your progress in action.

5. Join a Community

Sis, let me tell you—having a support system is EVERYTHING when you’re learning something new. Tech can feel isolating at times, but you don’t have to go it alone. Find a community of like-minded women who can encourage you, answer your questions, and celebrate your wins.

At Code It, Sis, we’ve created a space just for you. Our community is full of women who are on the same journey, and we’re here to support each other every step of the way. Whether you’re stuck on a coding problem, need advice on career options, or just want to vent about a frustrating day—we’ve got your back.

6. Keep Learning and Stay Curious

Tech is always evolving, so there’s always something new to learn. Once you’ve got a handle on the basics, don’t stop there. Keep pushing yourself to learn more, try new things, and stay curious. Whether it’s picking up a new programming language, exploring a new tech field, or attending industry events, staying engaged is key to growing your skills and staying competitive.

7. Take the Leap

Finally, don’t be afraid to take the leap. Whether it’s applying for your first tech job, enrolling in a course, or just telling people you’re officially a “techie,” taking that first step is the hardest—but also the most rewarding. Remember, every expert was once a beginner. And every beginner who keeps going eventually becomes an expert.
